Local Students Win Cash Awards at Investor Panel Event
The NPBC Chamber Foundation’s YEA! program recently hosted their annual “Shark Tank” event, otherwise known as the YEA! Investor Panel at the Florida Atlantic University’s Lifelong Learning Society Auditorium.
“The students have to have a well-prepared business plan. This is like the real world,” said Beth Kigel, President and CEO of the NPBC Chamber of Commerce. Thursday’s presentations were the culmination of three months of classes taken by YEA students at Nova Southeastern University in Palm Beach Gardens, FAU Honors College and the Scripps Research Institute. Meeting on Tuesdays for three hours and some Saturdays, local business leaders volunteered to teach and mentor the students. Whole Foods, Guanabanas restaurant and Roger Dean Stadium were the sites of field trips, said Kigel.
The five-minute presentations, which included videos and powerpoints, were made on a stage in front of the panel. Each applicant team was asked two questions. Some presenters simply crunched numbers. Others spoke in cadence. A few told jokes.
In the end, a total of $10,000 was awarded in start-up money. Read the full article for more information and photos.
